Children and Bowenwork
I love seeing children of all ages at my office. I work with little newborns with colic, to athletic teenagers with sprain/strain injuries. It is of my opinion that kids are the wisest and quickest healers! Kids benefit GREATLY from Bowenwork.
*Here's a list of various health situations we have seen positively impacted with Bowenwork:
Anxiety
ADD/ADHD
Asthma, Respiratory Issues
Autism/Asperger's
Bed-Wetting
Back and neck pain
Digestive Complaints/Constipation
Ear Aches
Growing Pains
Headaches/Migraines
Hormonal Imbalances/PMS
Jaw tension
Joint Pain
Scoliosis
Sleep Difficulties
Sports Injuries (sprains/strains, inflammation, swelling)
Trauma (physical/emotional)
Wellness and Relaxation Sessions
For Mom’s:
Pregnancy (pre and postpartum) discomforts such as back and SI pain, nausea, digestive complaints, to name a few
Colicy or upset babies
Infertility-we have a specific procedure that can stimulate reproductive function
With younger kids, Bowenwork procedures are done very similarly to those of adults; however, there is no rest between procedures, so a treatment takes 15 minutes or less. This means I can work on even the most rambunctious of toddlers. When kids hit their teenage years and hormonal changes begin to occur, then I work with them more like I do adults and honor the pauses between procedures.
Therapeutic Touch:
When children aren’t feeling well or have suffered trauma or injury, we, as parents almost always consult our pediatricians. If our child needs emotional support we may take them to a psychiatrist or counselor. When our children have an urgent need like a broken arm, a doctor will cast it up and give them anti-inflammatories. When they have learning differences, we may change their social or learning environment to better support their growth. However, one BIG link is often overlooked. What about therapeutic touch??
From the time our children are born, we love, hold and nurture them. It is instinctual. This touch is extremely important to a child’s growth and actually has an effect on neurological development and personality shaping. It has been shown that babies who are held and have their needs met will be more confident and self secure as adults. Positive touch continues to be a constant re-enforcement as children get older from hugs, to kisses, to getting tucked in at night. This connection and bond that is created will forever be imprinted into your child and set them up to feel secure and loved from the inside out.
Positive, healing touch has an effect on every system of a child’s body. When a child is experiencing some kind of injury or stress, having a body therapy, such as Bowenwork can be profoundly healing. Each movement given translates a message to their nervous system that “everything is okay.” When their body gets this message, it shifts the body from a stressed state to a relaxed state. When a child is relaxed and feels safe and secure, their nervous system can better tune into where the body needs repair and healing.
Children and Stress:
Take a moment to think of how your kids encounter stress on a day-to-day basis. They are bombarded in all areas from the processed foods they eat, pressures at school, busy schedules, media and television programs, hours on the computer, social and friendship drama, divorce, prescription medications, stressed out and overworked parents, environmental pollutions, etc., the list goes on. All this stress can weigh heavy on a child just like it does on you. They just don’t always have the vocabulary or maturity to articulate to you that they are feeling overwhelmed. This is another reason why touch therapy, such as Bowenwork, can be so wonderful for your child. You are creating time for them to come relax, let-go, and receive gentle therapeutic nurturing that ultimately affects every aspect of their being.
Teaching your Child Wellness:
Showing your child from a young age to nurture themselves by receiving safe, gentle and therapeutic touch will teach them the importance of self care and wellness. Like the ritual of brushing your teeth; it becomes a part of a lifestyle to keep the body healthy.
*As with all holistic therapies, Bowenwork is not a cure for anything. Please give us a call if you have specific questions about your child and be sure to consult with your child’s physician for any serious conditions or concerns.
